A Considered Approach

At Brown Thomas Arnotts, we are on a mission to Reinvent Retail. But we can’t do this alone.

Our ambition is to provide more third-party certified and accredited products to our customers while working to support circularity and continually improve our environmental and social practices in a luxury context.

This involves transforming more than our own supply chains; it’s about changing behaviours and challenging the way things have always been done. In short, this is big. Huge. And we don’t have all the answers yet. We will continue to engage and collaborate to realise our vision and purpose; to reinvent retail whilst continuing to empower our customers to make better-informed decisions.

How will we do this?

By driving positive change.

Two words need three big drivers to inspire action.

Our sustainability programme has three pillars that aim to revolutionise retail and the shopping experience.

The Considered Edit

The Considered Edit is a curated collection of fashion, beauty, home, food and Irish products that have been vetted through our strict verification process. The Edit includes a selection of products made with materials certified to recognised third-party standards, certified cruelty-free beauty, made in Ireland, pre-loved, or part of a refillable range. CIRCULAR INITIATIVES

Circular business models aim to reduce our reliance on precious natural resources by keeping materials and products in use for longer and reducing waste. Our customers now have the opportunity to shop for refillable products across beauty and home as well as pre-loved handbags. Customers can also resell items through our Full Circle programme in selected stores. For terms and conditions, click here.

RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

We train our buyers and work with our brands, concessions, restaurants, logistics and other suppliers to continuously improve environmental, labour and animal welfare practices and transparency across the supply chain. We work to ensure we are aligned and up to date with best practice initiatives.

CARBON COMMITMENTS

In 2020, we became the first retailer in Ireland to have our carbon reduction targets verified by the Science Based Targets initiative.

In 2025, we reviewed and updated our targets to align with the latest climate science and reflect our continued commitment to ambitious, impactful action. We commit to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 54.6% by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year. We also commit that 76.5% of our suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, capital goods and upstream transportation and distribution, will have science-based targets by FY2029.

Additionally, we have committed to significantly accelerating our target to achieve net-zero carbon across our business to 2040 by signing the Climate Pledge. The Climate Pledge is a cross-sector collaboration co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism to act on the climate emergency 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.

PACKAGING

Our iconic Arnotts carrier bags are made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, ensuring it is sourced from responsibly managed forests. We hope our carrier bags are reused again and again. When you're ready to recycle, simply remove the handles and any ribbon, the paper can be widely recycled.

100,000 Trees

In 2024 we announced a new partnership with Crann – Trees for Ireland, aimed at planting 100,000 trees in Ireland over the next ten years.

We have been inspired by customer and team feedback to support Crann's essential work in conservation, education, and tree planting across Ireland. As part of this afforestation initiative, we are introducing a nominal charge of €0.70 for our branded paper carrier bags, with profits from this initiative being invested in planting trees in Ireland. We invite you to join us on our mission to reduce paper usage and drive positive change for all. Learn more here.

The impact of what we do will answer to our customers, our own people and the communities around us. You can read more on Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Arnotts here.
