What do we mean by 'more sustainable'?
As modern consumers, we are increasingly conscious
of being more sustainable and ethical in our food and lifestyle choices. But what does this mean when it
comes to the fashion, beauty, food and interior products we buy?
Products on our Sustainable Edit meet strict criteria focusing on respecting people, planet and animals in
line with internationally recognised best practices.

Our Criteria
The Sustainable Edit is a curation of products which have been carefully selected based on key credentials which fall into one or more of eight key criteria. We work with our brand partners to vet products against this criteria.
Read more about our criteria for more sustainable fashions, beauty, homewares, food and more below.
Here we breakdown some of the language and terms in our criteria that are associated with sustainability and sustainable fashion, beauty, food and more.
Low Impact Materials
Products in this section contain materials that are made with a focus on having a
lighter footprint and a lower impact on the wellbeing of people, animals and the
environment. These includes certified organic materials and recycled materials. For a
product to qualify under this criteria, the low-impact material must be at least 50% of
the overall garment, and be accredited to third party, best practice standards.
The third-party certifications that we accept include the Global Organic Textile
Standard, Better Cotton, Global Recycled Standard, Tencel™ (a low impact material
sustainably sourced from wood pulp), Ecovero™ (sustainably sourced viscose), for
textiles, as well as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for timber, paper products and
textiles.

Considered Ingredients
Find beauty products that are made of natural and organic materials, with sustainably
sourced ingredients that are accredited to internationally recognised standards. Within
this category you can also find products which are ‘free from’ certain chemicals and
preservatives, such as parabens and sulphates.
Organic certifications and standards such as COSMOS, USDA, Soil Association and Irish
Organic Association ensure that a high threshold percentage of certified organic
ingredients is met before it can be classed as such. COSMOS Natural is most suitable for
products containing a lot of ingredients which cannot be organic, such as water, salt or
clay.
Products certified to either COSMOS Organic and COSMOS Natural are not tested on
animals, have no genetically modified ingredients, and are free from parabens,
phthalates, synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances.
Look out also for palm oil free, and products containing responsibly sourced palm oil
and derivatives as certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and
Rainforest Alliance.

Animal Welfare
Products and brands under our ‘Animal Welfare’ criteria include cosmetic products which
have not been tested on animals (i.e. Cruelty Free) and products containing animal
derived materials (i.e. wool, feathers) which have been responsibly and ethically
sourced.
Any brand or product denoted as ‘cruelty-free’ is certified to a recognised
‘cruelty-free’ international standard confirming that they are not tested on animals.
For example, PETA Cruelty Free or part of the Leaping Bunny Scheme.
Look out also for certified Wool and Down products. These certifications ensure best
practice animal welfare standards are met at farm level as well as promoting traceable
and environmentally conscious supply chains.
The standards to look for include Responsible Wool Standard, ZQ and Woolmark for wool,
and Downpass, and Responsible Down Standard for down and feather product.

Sustainable Lifestyles
The aim of this category is to encourage sustainable habits and behaviours.
Sustainable lifestyle choices should be easy, from reducing your reliance on single use
items, to reducing waste, this category collates the tools and products you need to do
it.
For example:
• Re-usable products that would normally be single use (e.g. coffee cup)
• Products that are a Refill to an existing product (e.g. candle refill, perfume
refill)
• Vintage and pre-loved products
Products in this category include re-usable containers, drinking bottles, and
re-fillable products. Refillable means you can replace just the part you need without
buying a whole new product, a saving for your pocket as well as the planet. For example,
refillable candles, beauty products (such as eye-shadow pallets) and perfumes.
Buying a pre-loved or vintage product extends the life of a product, while also allowing
you to inject a unique piece into your wardrobe as well as feeling great that you have
helped keep a product out of landfill.
