How to measure for your new Sofa
You may have your eye on a nice corner sofa or a lovely leather three-seater but will it fit in your room?
All our sofas have measurements for length, width and height as well are more detailed information on seat depth, seat height, back height and arm width.
Our measuring guide below shows an example of how each dimension is measured.
Width (W) is the widest length on the sofa from end to end.
Depth (D) is the measurement from the front seat of the sofa to the back.
Height (H) is measured from the floor up to the highest point on the headrest.
Seat Height (SH) is the measurement from the floor up to the top of the seat. This will tell you how low you will be to the ground when seated.
Seat Depth (SD) is the measurement from the front of the seat pad to the back seat cushion. A deep seat depth might suit you better if you are have long legs or are tall.
Back Height (BH) is the measurement from the seat pad to the top of the head rest on your sofa. If you enjoy lying back and having neck support you may want to consider a sofa with a high back height or an additional headrest.
Arm Width (AW) refers the width of the sofa armrest. If you have a compact room you may want to consider a sofa with narrower armrests which will allow more space for seating.
Clearance (C) refers the space from the bottom of the sofa to the floor.
To help you decide how your new sofa will fit, you can mark out the floor with masking tape in the shape of the sofa to see how much room it will take up. You can then also gauge where side tables will go and if you have enough room to get around the sofa.
If your room has an access problem, a corner sofa or a sofa with arms that detach might be a good option for you as you can bring in your new sofa piece by piece.
