Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about you?

“I'm a former personal trainer who's always been interested in interiors and decided to start studying Interior Design after fully renovating my home. It's a period house that needed to be completely gutted…so it's effectively a new house - aside from the external walls!

I've been working in Arnotts since 2017, firstly in the curtain department before moving to furniture where I've been ever since.”

How would you describe the new Home & Interior Stylist service?

“The service is comparable to the personal shopper experience offered in the fashion department. Just like in fashion, when it comes to home interiors, there can be so many choices that it can feel overwhelming. However, with fashion, you may require a personal shopper for a specific occasion like a wedding, whereas with interiors you'll more than likely be using these products on a daily basis for many years to come, which is why it’s important to have expert advice.

An interiors expert, like myself, will have extensive product knowledge and expertise on all of the brands available throughout the store. We’ll be able to offer advice ensuring that you choose the best quality and purchase with confidence. What’s more, they'll be up to date with current brands, trends and offers so that you can be reassured that you're not missing out on anything.”

How exactly will the Home & Interior Stylist service work?

“The aim is to provide a seamless and stress-free shopping experience. The service will offer everything from furniture to home decor, bedding to kitchenware and gifting.

The service will initially begin with a consultation where we will establish your needs. You will also receive a detailed brief so that we can gather as much information as we can on your requirements. Once we gather all of the information and figure out what your needs may be, we will put together an ‘Inspiration Board’ which we will run past you. From there, we can accompany you around the store helping you to make informed decisions.

If, however, you're unable to come into the store or are too busy to do so, we can meet virtually - that’s no problem at all. We can provide all of the same product specifications for the items that you require, including sending fabric samples for furniture items.”

How about those who have already decorated their homes?

“This service is here to help you - whatever your needs may be. Whether you simply want a home refresh or a total home makeover, we can work together by looking at your current home style, and then select items to complement your existing pieces. But it’s not all about decorating and makeovers, we’re here to offer advice on all aspects of home and lifestyle be it new kitchenware, technology or bedding.”

"Well, first you need to know of the many different decor styles. Below are just some of the most popular:

  • Traditional - Warm colour palettes, luxurious soft furnishings and textiles and a very homely feel.
  • Bohemian - Lots of texture, colour, embellishment and layering of various elements. Rugs in jute or with colurful finishes.
  • Coastal - Light, airy, sand colours, blues and bright whites. Natural fabrics such as linen or cotton in plain or striped designs.
  • Country/Farmhouse - Plenty of character. Combining vintage with modern pieces. Use of shiplap.
  • Contemporary/Minimal - Neutral colour palette. Clean lines. Lots of space and open plan living. No clutter.
  • Mid-Century - Similar to minimal but using 1950s style furniture. Neutral colour tones but introducing natural elements such as wood. Functionality to furniture. Big emphasis on lighting.

If you take a look around your home and notice a repeat of patterns, colours or similar styles to the above design categories, then you’ve found your home’s style!"

What advice or tips do you have to get someone out of an interiors rut?

“If you feel like your décor looks tired or your furniture has become uncomfortable and you're not sure where to start in order to freshen it up - then you may be in a home rut. You can update your look easily and relatively inexpensively with some contemporary accessories, new lighting and fresh cushions and throws to add warmth and texture.

If you are in need of more change, you might want to take a little more time with more expensive pieces like furniture updates as these are things that can be very specific and you want to last. This is where advice from an expert can really help.”

What's the most common decorating mistake people tend to make?

“One thing that I come across quite frequently is people selecting a fabric for their new furniture based on their current wall colour. While it's not easy to change a wall colour, it's even more difficult and costly to change the fabric on your sofa. I would recommend selecting your sofa or curtain fabric before choosing your wall colour. These are usually going to be fixed pieces in your room for a long time to come and should give you flexibility for changing your wall colour or accessories in the future.”

What trends are you noticing in home and interiors that you are excited for this year?

“I'm excited to see more muted tones like chocolate browns and terracotta coming back. These look great against more neutral backgrounds. Sculptural furniture and accessories will also be big this year as well as organic materials like wood and marble. Refined outdoor furniture will also be popular as we spend more time entertaining outdoors.”
